Highland-Clarksburg Hospital Announces $17.5M Expansion

Clarksburg, WV, June 27, 2017 — Highland-Clarksburg Hospital has announced that they will be expanding services in 2018. The $17.4 million dollar expansion is expected to be complete in 2018.

Highland-Clarksburg Hospital will be adding a total of 58 beds, 38 of which will be reserved for patients who are seeking substance abuse treatment. The hospital, and its staff, are being proactive in West Virginia’s fight against the addiction crisis throughout the state. A community health needs assessment survey has identified the needs for North Central West Virginia with drug treatment issues showing the highest demand.

Julie Bozarth, Director of Therapy and Social Services, said that there is currently a 10 bed acute care unit for 13- to 17-year-olds that will open on July 5, 2017. This unit will serve as a seven- to 10-day detoxification unit. “This will be a safe place to get the drugs out of their system. It is a volatile time with both physical and mental issues that must be addressed,” Bozarth said.

The state Health Care Authority recently issued Highland-Clarksburg an exemption for a certificate of need to develop the detoxification and residential treatment program for 19 adults and 19 adolescents, according to Authority Chair, Sonia Chambers.

Currently, Highland-Clarksburg Hospital has 115 beds. The expansion will boost that number to 173, a 50 percent increase. It is projected that the hospital’s full-time employees will increase to 350 by the end of 2019.

“We are looking at substantial growth at Highland-Clarksburg, primarily on the clinical side and also support staff,” said Mike Casdorph, Chief Executive Officer. The expansion will include an 8,000 square foot gymnasium, a 200 foot by 110 foot outdoor green space for patients, and a day-care center for employees. The Hospital is working with the USDA Rural Development Group on the financing of the project.

“This is an exciting time at HCHI,” said Casdorph.
